macOS 27.2 RC is Out--Build 26B118 Adds Siri AI in Five More Languages and New Keyboard Sliders, Carries Touch Gestures for a Mac Apple Has Not Announced, and Lands Nine Days Before the October 28 Pro and Tell Event

Apple seeded the macOS 27.2 release candidate to developers on October 19, listed as build 26B118 on Apple's developer releases page beside the Xcode 27.2 RC. It comes one week after the fourth beta, and MacRumors expects the finished update "toward the end of October." There was no 27.1 for the Mac, as our September 21 report on the first 27.2 beta explains, so this is the first feature update to Golden Gate: Siri AI in five more languages, a new look for the keyboard volume and brightness sliders, and touch gestures for a Mac Apple has not announced.
Three changes, one of them for a Mac that does not exist
The languages are the five Apple's September 14 press release promised for October, "French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish," and 9to5Mac says all five are in the RC. The sliders are the ones MacRumors described in its September 21 report on the second beta: a segmented bar instead of a plain line when you press a volume or brightness key, a single larger icon at the left, and the slider drawn under the matching menu bar icon; the Control Center sliders did not change. The gestures are code, not a feature. MacRumors' October 5 report on the third beta found touch-specific gesture recognizers in Safari, Notes, Photos and Quick Look and said that "it's not a clear indication of a new Mac," since they could serve Sidecar. The two Apple Intelligence features held back from Golden Gate are not in the RC's notes, and on October 20 Apple's macOS page still footnotes Suggestions in Messages and the Passwords fix as "coming in a future software update."
Apple's notes list what is broken, not what is new
Apple's release notes for the 27.2 RC are a developer document. The SDK "comes bundled with Xcode 27.2." One fix is marked resolved: Xcode "might crash when using code completion on macOS 27.2 beta." One deprecation: the EnablePasteboardPrivacyDeveloperPreview default is gone. Three known issues: with an external display connected, "display settings might not be restored correctly, and the display arrangement might change"; a clean install "might not prompt you to allow notifications for some apps, such as Calendar, Maps, Find My, Home, and Weather," with System Settings, Notifications as the workaround; and Describe a Shortcut "might fail with the error 'Something went wrong. Try again later.'" 9to5Mac adds a bug from beta 4 that Apple's notes do not mention: windows in Electron-based apps "randomly stop responding to dragging attempts," and a restart fixes it only for a while.
The release lands between an event and a store date
MacRumors expects 27.2 "toward the end of October," 9to5Mac says "the coming weeks," and Apple has named no date. What Apple has named, per MacRumors' October 19 report on the invitations, is a "Pro and Tell" media experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28 at 10 a.m. Pacific, where the OLED touch-screen MacBook Pro is expected; our October 16 item on the launch experience has the rest of the reported lineup and the reported November 6 store date. By our count the RC came nine days before the event; Apple has not connected the two.
What to do now
A release candidate is the build Apple intends to ship unless something breaks, but it still arrives through the beta channel, and 9to5Mac's steps are the beta's: back up, open System Settings, General, Software Update, click the information button beside Beta Updates, choose macOS Developer Golden Gate Beta and press Done. 9to5Mac says it is going to developers and public beta testers alike. Our advice is unchanged from the beta: put it on a spare Mac, or wait the week or two for the release. Nothing in the 27.2 notes makes waiting unsafe on 27.0.1, the update in our October 3 report.
Then and now
Apple confirmed on October 16, 2007 that Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard would ship on Friday, October 26, with pre-orders at $129, as our October 17, 2007 note recorded, and our October 20, 2007 note on Apple's Leopard Guided Tour called it "an excellent video on the main new features." Our October 26, 2007 install tips told readers to check the disk and then clone it to an external FireWire drive before installing, and our October 30, 2007 report counted more application quits and kernel panics in three days than in a year with Tiger and suggested waiting for 10.5.1. Then the preview was a video and the release a $129 DVD; now the preview is the release itself, installable a week or two early. We'll post a hands-on report after we install it. The 2007 advice stands: clone the drive first.
