macOS 27.2 Beta 1 is Out--Build 26B5086k Two Days After Golden Gate, 27.1 Skipped for the iPhone Duo, and the Two Delayed Apple Intelligence Features Still Unconfirmed

macOS 27.2 beta 1 is out for developers. Apple's developer releases page lists macOS 27.2 beta as build 26B5086k, dated September 16, two days after macOS 27.0 (26A428) shipped on September 14. There is no 27.1 beta for the Mac: Apple says iOS 27.1 is the iPhone Duo's system, and the betas for everything else went straight to 27.2. Apple's release notes for the beta list known issues and no new features, and the two Apple Intelligence features held back from Golden Gate are still marked "coming in a future software update" on Apple's own macOS page.

Apple skipped 27.1 because the iPhone Duo owns it

Apple's developer news post of September 16 announced the 27.2 betas for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS and watchOS, then added a note: "When iPhone Duo becomes available on October 23, it will run iOS 27.1. This version builds on the foundation of iOS 27 and introduces features that were purpose-built for the new foldable design." Xcode 27.1 beta (27A9269), the release Apple said would carry the Duo simulator, followed on September 18. AppleInsider put it plainly: "since the iOS 27.1 build is made with iPhone Duo elements in mind, that version is being skipped for the non-foldable iPhone models."

The release notes list known issues, not features

Apple's macOS 27.2 beta release notes are a developer document: the SDK "comes bundled with Xcode 27.2," and the rest is three known issues, three StoreKit testing fixes and one StoreKit testing issue. Xcode "might crash when using code completion on macOS 27.2 beta," with a defaults-write workaround. A clean install "might not prompt you to allow notifications for some apps, such as Calendar, Maps, Find My, Home, and Weather"; the fix is System Settings > Notifications. And Describe a Shortcut "might fail with the error 'Something went wrong. Try again later.'" There is no entry for a new feature.

That leaves the two features Apple pulled from the launch. MacRumors lists them: Suggestions in Messages, which offers to insert a photo or add an invitation to Calendar, and the Apple Intelligence feature "that automatically updates weak and compromised passwords using Safari." MacRumors says "it's possible the features will return as soon as the 27.2 release"; 9to5Mac wrote on September 16 that it was "digging through the code to check whether these made it to macOS 27.2 beta 1," and we found no report from either outlet by September 20 saying they had. Apple's macOS 27 page still footnoted both on September 20: "Suggestions in Messages conversations coming in a future software update," and for the Passwords fix, "Coming in a future software update." Siri AI's five new languages are the likely payload

Apple's September 14 press release says "Siri AI is now rolling out as a beta in English, with support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish coming in October." On the iPhone that has landed: MacRumors' guide to the iOS 27.2 beta says "Siri AI is available in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish in the iOS 27.2 beta." 9to5Mac said developers might find the same languages in the Mac beta; none of the reports we read had confirmed them on a Mac by September 20. AppleInsider expects the redesigned Health app to show up in a beta for initial testing only; it is "still expected to ship in 2026, but not in version 27.2." What to do now

Registered developers get the build from System Settings > General > Software Update, by opening the Beta Updates menu and choosing the macOS Developer Golden Gate Beta, per 9to5Mac's steps, after a full backup. As of September 20, Apple's releases page listed only the developer build. AppleInsider's standing advice is ours too: a beta belongs on a spare Mac, and "even though the first releases are out, it doesn't lessen the risk of issues in betas for later-released updates."

The last time a Mac OS beta reached this office in September, it came on a disc. Dana Baggett's iMac 350 took the Mac OS X Public Beta "without a hitch" while our Power Mac G4 Sawtooth refused it, as our September 2000 report on the Public Beta records; our follow-up four days later blamed a Voodoo5 video card, and our comments after a week with it called Aqua "gorgeous" and Classic not ready. Twenty-six years on, the beta is a menu choice.
