Apple began selling parts and tools for the Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro and the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra on October 20, 9to5Mac reported, the same day it added the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The two Macs are listed as "Mac mini (M6 or M5 Pro)" and "Mac Studio (M5 Max or M5 Ultra)" on Apple's Self Service Repair Store, beside the earlier minis and the 2022, 2023 and 2025 Studios, and MacRumors says the parts are on sale "in the U.S., Canada, and Europe." Both machines reached customers on September 22, so the parts arrived four weeks after the Macs, by our count. An out-of-warranty logic board or power supply no longer needs a Genius Bar appointment, if you have the skill and the manual.

What the store sells for each Mac

9to5Mac's list for the Mac Studio runs "from Thunderbolt and USB-C ports to fans, speakers, SSD modules, logic boards, and power supplies." The Mac mini's list is shorter: "fans, speakers, logic boards, batteries, and power supplies, among others." Apple's Self Service Repair page says you "purchase genuine Apple parts and rent or buy professional-grade tools from the Self Service Repair Store," and that "to purchase the genuine Apple parts and tools, you will need the repair manual ID." Apple issued no press release for the expansion, and we have not priced a logic board, so we quote no part prices.

The manuals came out a month before the parts

Apple published the Mac mini (M6 or M5 Pro) Repair Manual and the Mac Studio (M5 Max or M5 Ultra) Repair Manual on September 21, the day before the Macs shipped; the manual IDs are LQRHBW and PJEMTC. The mini's manual has thirteen procedures: bottom cover, power button, battery, antenna plate, antenna connector board, Wi-Fi antennas, fan, speaker, front USB-C ports, audio board and status indicator light, logic board, power supply and housing. The Studio's adds the parts a bigger box has: an internal frame, three antennas, SSD modules, an Ethernet board, the back Thunderbolt ports, a combination input and output board, the power cord port and an SDXC card slot board. Both manuals open with the same troubleshooting chapters, Quick Checks and Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair, then Communication, Input/Output, Mechanical, Power and Startup, and Sound. Apple's program page adds that "Repair Assistant and System Configuration are postrepair software tools for finishing repairs" and that "the repair manual will indicate if a postrepair software tool is recommended," so read the manual's first page before you order.

Who the program is for

Apple's page says "Self Service Repair is intended for individuals with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices," and that has been the line since the program opened. The Mac mini and Mac Studio first joined it on December 13, 2023, when Apple's press release added the M2 models and opened Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair in the U.S. the same day, with Europe to follow in 2024. The Macs themselves cost what they did on August 25: Apple's Mac mini release put the M6 model at $899 and the M5 Pro at $1,699, and its Mac Studio release put the M5 Max at $2,499 and the M5 Ultra at $5,499; our September 15 report on the mini and our September 9 report on the Studio have the configurations. Also on October 20, Apple's American Manufacturing Program release said its Advanced Manufacturing Center in Houston "will begin manufacturing Mac mini" before the end of 2026.

Then and now

On October 21, 1999, our note on XLR8's G4 upgrades relayed the 350 MHz MACh Carrier G4 at $749 and the MACh ZIF G4 at $649, for Power Macs from the 7300 through the G3 and most clones, and our November 10, 1999 note pointed to Accelerate Your Mac's walkthrough of installing one in a Blue and White G3. Two years earlier to the day, our October 21, 1997 note set a 275 MHz PowerLogix PowerForce G3 card at over $2,500 against the editor's own 8500 and its PowerBoost Pro 225. When the first Mac mini arrived, our January 31, 2005 note counted ten articles on learning the machine and six on troubleshooting on Apple's new support page. Then you opened the case to make the Mac faster, and other companies sold you the part; now you open it to keep the Mac running, and the one part you can fit is the one Apple sells. A genuine part and a manual still beat a sealed box, and we would rather have them four weeks late than never.
