Macs Only!
Thanks to a note on Ted Landau's MacFixIt, yesterday I received numerous e-mails regarding the RAM Loss issue with Netscape and Mac OS 8 that I posted on 10/7. Most but not all of them were from Apple 6400 or PowerComputing PowerBase owners. In contrast to my experience, many indicated that they got the large RAM loss reported by "About This Computer" by just running and quitting Netscape, i.e. not by running any other apps while Netscape was connected via PPP. I confirmed that I do not get the RAM loss with my Quadra 605, so it is still confined to my PowerBase 180 using the repeatable sequence that I noted on the 7th edition of Macs Only!. The problem is with Open Transport 1.2 as it appears that it was fixed in versions 1.1.1 and 1.1.2. A beta tester for Mac OS 8.1 with Open Transport v1.3, who wishes to remain anonymous for obvious reasons, stated that the RAM loss problem still exists in OT v1.3 and probably will when it comes out in final. This shouldn't be tolerated as it appears to have been fixed (or nearly so) once. I recommend that you write Apple about this.
